I began my career in radiography in 1990. I graduated from the St. Alexis School of Radiologic Technology in North Dakota and worked in radiography for a year before moving to nuclear medicine. I spent my evenings at school learning nuclear medicine. I finished my bachelor’s degree during the day. I have spent the past 18 years in nuclear medicine and have earned advanced certifications in PET, or positron emission tomography, and cardiology.
In 2005, I helped start the PET and Cardiac PET department at MeritCare Medical Group in Fargo, N.D., a 585-bed facility. I manage the PET department. MeritCare has two PET scanners, one in the cancer centre for oncology and CT planning and the other in the heart centre. MeritCare is one of only 100 facilities in the United States performing rubidium cardiac PET scans.
I have had many profession opportunities throughout my career at MeritCare including helping to start a preceptor training programme for facilities adding cardiac PET imaging. I led our PET centre’s accreditation process by the American College of Radiology, or ACR. MeritCare’s oncology PET department has been approved for its second three-year term by ACR and our cardiac PET department has also passed accreditation.
I have been a clinical preceptor, teaching nuclear medicine students in our area, and I am working with a cardiologist on a PET research project. I have had many opportunities to be involved in the purchase of new PET equipment, and I enjoy public speaking engagements on cardiac PET and oncology PET imaging. I have just finished collaborating on a national Webcast for medical centres contemplating starting cardiac PET imaging.
Nuclear medicine technology has been a very exciting profession to work in and has provided me with many opportunities for growth. I have been actively involved in my profession from the beginning of my career, serving on city and state professional boards before advancing to leadership roles in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, (ASRT), where I served on the Board of Directors for five years. I owe much of my success to what I have learned through my involvement with the ASRT.

Stewart was born in Belfast, N. Ireland and is married to Eunice and has three children; Judith, Shirley-Ann and Mark (all married) and five grandchildren.
He lives in Wrea Green, a Lancashire village, near Preston, England and visits regularly his daughter in Australia.
Stewart undertook his radiography training in the Royal Army Medical Corps qualifying in 1967 at the Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich, London.  After serving in the Army he returned to N. Ireland working first at the Lagan Valley Hospital Lisburn and then at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast where he qualified as a Radiographer Teacher before moving to Altnagelvin Hospital, Londonderry as Deputy Superintendent Radiographer.
In 1978 he was appointed District Radiographer at Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he remained until the autumn of 2006 when he retired from the NHS as Directorate Manager of Radiology and Physiotherapy Services.
Shortly after leaving the NHS he established UK Radiology Advisory Services Ltd a company dedicated to providing medical imaging advice and support to various NHS and Private Sector organisations.
In his role of Radiology Advisor he has helped establish Imaging Services in the Primary Care setting as well as supporting a variety of public and private health care providers and currently acts as Radiology Advisor to NHS Blackpool.

He has represented Radiography in a variety of roles including Radiographer Advisor on the England Department of Health Radiology Advisory Group in the 1980s, Vice President for UKRC in 2004 and 2005 heading Service Delivery. He was an advisor on the Pritchard Report on Breast Screening, radiographer lead for the SCOR in the development of standards for the National Radiology Accreditation Programme as well as speaking at a number of regional and national conferences including presenting the 2006 William Stripp memorial lecture.
He was instrumental in commissioning a number of major imaging projects in Blackpool of enhanced radiographer roles which had a significant effect in improving patient services. He also established effective hospital wide Quality Assurance and IRMER groups and programmes and has spoken at national and regional meetings on these subjects.
In 2001 he commissioned the first community PACS in the North West and one of the first in London, England well ahead of the national programme as well as organising PACS and IRMER study days in Blackpool.
