WHO and the ISRRT
The International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in official relations with the World Health Organisation (WHO) representing Radiographers, Radiological Technologists and Radiation Therapists and the ISRRT member organizations on a global scale.
As an officially recognized NGO the ISRRT facilitates the global improvement of standards of delivery and practice of medical imaging and radiation therapy by acting as the international voice of radiographers/technologists. This is accomplished by liaison, partnership, and collaboration with the WHO on a variety of topics and projects.
The WHO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that work in areas of international public health. It was established on April 7th 1948 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The WHO had 6 regional offices and has more than 7000 people working in 150 country offices. World Health Day is celebrated every April 7th to commemorate the establishment of the WHO.
The WHO’s goal is to work with governments and other partners such as the ISRRT to ensure the highest attainable level of health for all people in the world no matter what their economic status is.
The WHO is responsible for administering the International Health Partnership which is a group that helps improve the health of citizens in developing countries. Through this the WHO supports work toward development goals, and governmental health policy with the aim to enhance health equality. An example of one such goal for the WHO is to combat diseases such as noncommunicable diseases including cancer and heart disease. The WHO’s main area of work includes:
- Health systems
- Promoting health through the life-course
- Noncommunicable diseases
- Communicable diseases
- Corporate services
- Preparedness, surveillance, and response
The WHO supports countries as they coordinate the efforts of multiple sectors of the government and partners – including bi- and multilateral, funds and foundations, civil society organizations and private sector – to attain their health objectives and support their national health policies and strategies
The ISRRT works with the WHO on specific projects that promote high-quality Patient Care and improves Education and Research in the radiation medicine sciences.
