Report from Dr Maria Law, ISRRT Vicer President for Asia/Australasia

 Description of Activity / Conference:

·        26th Singapore Malaysian Radiographers’ Conference

·        I did a 30-minute presentation on “Enhancing Professional Competence: Where are We? The experience of the Hong Kong College of Radiographers and Radiation Therapists

Summary of Outcome(s) of Activity / Conference:

·        Singapore and Malaysia hold joint annual conferences and they alternate between the two countries. Representatives from the region were invited to attend: Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand. This offered another occasion for members of the region to meet up.

·        In private, the concern about the succession of radiographer educators worldwide was brought up and briefly discussed among the President, Dr. Michael Ward, Professor Mary Lovegrove (who were also invited speakers for the conference) and myself. This could be an issue that the ISRRT need to address.

·        The most exciting thing was that we met up with some representatives of the Philippines Society, whom we have been searching for their contacts. I will meet some of them again when I go to the Western Pacific Regional Committee Meeting of the WHO in Manila mid October 2011. The group showed interest in hosting the World Congress in the Philippines. Though a little embarrassed, I alluded to the need of being a paid-up member and they understood.

·        I was invited to attend the conference as the VP of ISRRT. I also speak on behalf my College in Hong Kong. My expenses will be split between ISRRT and my College.
