The Mesothelioma Center
Radiation therapy makes use of a type of radiation called "ionizing radiation," which is used to kill existing cancer cells and control the growth of new cancer cells. Depending on the nature of the patient's condition and their type of asbestos cancer, radiation therapy may be used as a stand-alone treatment or may be used in conjunction with surgery or chemotherapy.
In addition, mesothelioma radiation may be used either as a curative treatment or as a palliative treatment. In the latter case, the purpose of radiation therapy is not to cure the patient, but simply to provide relief from pain and other symptoms of the cancer. This is often the case for mesothelioma patients that are prescribed radiation therapy.
There are three main types of radiation therapy: external beam radiotherapy, unsealed source radiation therapy, and brachytherapy. In most cases, only external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy are used to treat mesothelioma. The type of radiation treatment a patient receives depends on several factors, including the type of mesothelioma, the stage of the disease, and whether other treatment options are also viable.
For another great resource on mesothelioma, check out the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance. Their community resource network connects patients and families with everything they need during the treatment process.

On January 1, 1994, the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging merged to form the Society of Magnetic Resonance (now named the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine). The first annual meeting of the merged Society was held in Dallas, Texas, USA, in March 1994. The most recent annual meeting was held in Berlin, Germany, 19-25 2007.
The merged International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine is an international, nonprofit, scientific association whose purpose is to promote communication, research, development, and applications in the field of magnetic resonance in medicine and biology and other related topics and to develop and provide channels and facilities for continuing education in the field. Its multidisciplinary membership of over 6,000 consists of clinicians, physicists, engineers, biochemists, and technologists.
In addition to its large scientific meetings, the Society holds workshops and publishes two journals, Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and a newsletter, MR Pulse. It also sponsors study groups on specific areas of scientific interest and chapters based on geographical location
Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists (SMRT) was founded to provide
a forum for education, information, and research
in the field of magnetic resonance. The primary objective of the SMRT is to
advance the education and training for MRI/S technologists worldwide. The SMRT
is committed to promoting the communication and dissemination of information
regarding current and emerging technological advances to its members.
