Regional Co-ordinator for Africa - Public Relations
Sumbo Oyedele

Sumbo was born over 50 years ago into the most famous tribe of Nigeria – the Yorubas. She started her radiography career in 1972 and graduated from the Federal school of Radiography Yaba, Lagos in 1975. At the time the training was managed and conducted under the auspices of the Society Radiographers, London. She therefore graduated with a DCR. Her training was hectic but thorough, and the school claimed her class had set the best results to date.

Sumbo immediately took a locum with the Radiology Department, University College Hospital, Ibadan, which was, and still is, the biggest and most widely known hospital in Nigeria. The hospital can boast of over 1000 beds and at the time trained radiographers for the country. She was later confirmed as a basic radiographer in that department and she has since worked there, moving up the ladder till she reached the post of Deputy Director (Radiography).

In nearly 30 years of post training Sumbo has completed several courses, such as Computerized Tomography at the University of Wales, Cardiff, Executive Management Course at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and a Radiation Protection Course at the Physics department, University of Ibadan. She has also attended several workshops/conferences both at national and international levels. She is a common face at ISRRT courses and makes time to often attend the UKRC.

Sumbo has contributed immensely to the profession of radiography in Nigeria. She was the first to acquire any training in CT and as such has trained over 300 radiographers on CT. She served as Vice President of The Association of Radiographers (ARN) for six years and as President for three years. In her tenure as President, the profession moved up positively. She is a fellow of her association. She is also the Assistant Secretary of PACORI (Pan African Congress of Radiography and Imaging).

She is the Council Member for Nigeria and presently elected as the Regional Coordinator in Public Relations for Africa.  She is the proud mother of two sons and a daughter. Her hobbies include watching movies and traveling.
