 Radiation Protection Papers

 The Radiation Protection of Patients (RPOP) website of the IAEA is providing lot of information on patients and staff information. New information has been made available on patient protection. Free training material in the form of power point slides is available in diagnostic and interventional radiology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and also in cardiology and hybrid imaging (PET/CT, SPECT/CT).

  While leaving behind 2010, I wish to give you a brief round of 2010.

  1. The RPOP website received an average of 0.75 million hits/month (nearly 10 million/year) through about 12000 absolute unique visitors each month in 2010 which is 50% increase over 2009.
  2. It continued to appear on First page of Google (or Yahoo…) search and normally on top of first page with most commonly searched terms in medical radiation protection.
  3. A new section that was added in 2010 was Information for patients.
  4. Other new pages were on radiation protection in gastroenterology (English, Spanish and Portuguese), Urology, Orthopaedic surgery
  5. New training material in Spanish language was added and a number of publications
  6. Networks of gastroenterologists in radiation protection and on radiation protection of children were created
  7. A position statement on release of patients after radionuclide therapy was released
  8. A number of latest news items were posted
  9. Smart Card/SmartRadTrack project concept was published in Lancet and IAEA cataract studies were published

Several years ago, the ISRRT was asked to assess some new teaching materials on Radiation Protection being developed by IAEA. We were pleased to be one of the collaborators, which also included the World Health Organization, The Pan American Health Organization, the International Society of Radiologists and the International Organization for Medical Physics. Some changes were suggested and incorporated into the Training materials which were then packaged and designed for presenters of this information.

 

The IAEA gave full access to ISRRT to copy and distribute and three programs were provided.

The ISRRT copied approximately 70 of each CD, created a folder and an insert that clarified its use and target group. This information is part of the program once the CD is opened. We wanted to make sure radiographers understood the design and proposed use and that it would give them greater incentive to make use of the material.

 

 At the Durban Congress of ISRRT in April 2008, copies of each were distributed to each council member. Each member represents a country and 48 were in attendance. In addition attendees to the Congress were able to order more copies free of charge and a further 60 CDs were sent out. The majority of these went to training programs and some have already been integrated into the full curricula.
