From the Desk of Public Relations

November 2009

Director of Public Relations:  Fozy Peer

2009 has proved to be a busy year for activities related to the public relations portfolio. The team has attended various meetings and activities in their respective regions and policy documents have been compiled and/or reviewed.

‘The Role of a Professional Organization’ has been compiled as a guideline and is available on the ISRRT website. A power point presentation entitled ‘Why Radiography as a Career’ is available from the CEO for use by members to promote Radiography. The criteria for corporate membership have been reviewed. The guidelines on hosting congresses are in the process of being updated. To promote the ISRRT and its activities the presentation on ‘ISRRT an International Perspective’ and/or the flyer ‘Why Support the ISRRT’ may be used. Also available are the criteria for the use of the ISRRT logo.

At the recent board meeting, it was proposed that the 50th anniversary of ISRRT be commemorated during the World Congress in Canada in 2012. The ISRRT was founded in 1962. The history of the ISRRT is to be compiled and made available by 2012. Ideas for the celebration of this event, newsworthy historical items and pictures are welcomed.

The theme adopted by the ISRRT for the World Radiography Day celebrations for 2009 is “Radiographers Care about YOUR Protection”. This is in keeping with “Image Gently” initiative of the ‘Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging’. By agreeing to become an affiliate of the alliance, the ISRRT has agreed to:

·         Endorse the primary objective of raising awareness in the imaging community of the need to adjust radiation dose when imaging children and the ultimate goal of changing practice.

·         Communicate the Alliance messages through our organization’s electronic and print media on specified release dates.

·         Communicate the Alliance’s goals to their members and constituents through mail, email, conferences, and meetings

·         Offer contributions to the body of knowledge for possible inclusion on the Alliance website.

·        Refer questions and media queries to the designated public spokespersons from the founding member organizations.

The ISRRT website is constantly reviewed and updates are requested. E-copies of previous Newsletters are available on the website. Hopefully this edition (November 2009) of the Newsletter will be available in French and Spanish. Currently hardcopies of the Newsletter are published in May and November each year; however this is being reviewed due to the high costs of printing and postage. In future the Newsletter might only be available electronically. Also this will be in keeping with our ‘environment friendly initiative’. In future, electronic communication from the ISRRT will display the following message:

As a public relations exercise, I suggested that members of the PR team be allowed to attend at least one major event/meeting in their respective regions. This will allow for the radiographic community to interact with and relate the extended ISRRT management team and it will enhance the PR portfolio. Currently PR regional reps attend meetings at their own expense. This was discussed at the recent Board meeting and hopefully will be approved in the next budget.

The meeting to be attended will be discussed with the regional directors and vice presidents. The PR representatives are:

Sumbo Oyedele (Africa)

Tan Chek Wee (Asia-Australasia)

Stefano Braico (Europe)

Sean Richardson (The Americas)

Do keep the ISRRT informed of interesting events that take place in your countries.

Robert George, Sandy Yule and other Board members are great PR ambassadors of the ISRRT as they promote the ISRRT extensively during their travels. Many thanks to my fellow Board members for their valuable and continued support.

Regional coordinators report for Asia and Australasia region

Malaysia

Congratulations to Malaysia on the great success of 17th AACRT held in Kuala Lumpur on 13-16th August 2009. More than three hundreds over participants participated in this conference theme: Technology and Role Evolution. The ISRRT regional and AACRT council meeting were also held in conjunction with the conference.  A few issues regarding the re-organizing of AACRT conference were discussed during the meeting. Taiwan will be the next host for the 18th AACRT in 2011 in Kao Shiong.

Hong Kong

Congratulations to Mr. Apollo Wong for being re-elected as the president of the Hong Kong Radiological Technological Association at the recent AGM.

Singapore

To celebrate Radiographers’ Day this year, Singapore Society of Radiographers will be organizing a Sandcastle Building Competition on 31st Oct 2009 at the East Coast Park. The event promise to be a fun filled event not only for radiographers but for their family as well. There will be attractive prizes for the top 3 winners for building the most impressive sandcastle. Radiographers can also bring along their own picnic basket, beach ball and Frisbees to have a picnic at the beach too. It will be an exciting celebration for all radiographers and their family on this Radiographers’ Day.

Report for Americas region

From the beautiful isle of the Caribbean I greet everyone. It is my pleasure in reporting the developments within the

Americas region for the past 6 month:

The Brazil Radiological Association has expressed its desire to become a member of the ISRRT. This position will be confirmed in December when the PR representative

visits Rio de Janeiro and meets with members of the radiological profession and association of the Brazil. Chile has requested the ISRRT to support/participate

in a conference in 2010. Further information of this conference will be published as soon as it is provided by the Chilean Association (see page 6 of this issue).

The VP of the Americas along with the Argentine Association is working tediously at hosting a workshop/conference in Argentina in June/July 2010.

Trinidad and Tobago Association of Radiographers is having their 35th anniversary conference on its beautiful sister island of Tobago on October 31 and November 1,

2009. All Radiographers are invited. Trinidad and Tobago Association of Radiographers has also committed funding to the WRETF. Barbados and Jamaica will have their

usualRadiographers' Week celebrations.

Yes colleagues, it is that time of the year again, when radiographers world-wide make preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Nobel profession. This

year observation of International Radiographers week will be special for many with church services, award

dinners, conferences, patient appreciation days and career showcases, just to name a few. It is my honour as the PR of the Americas to wish each and every Radiation

Medicine Technology professional and student a successful International Radiation Week 2009.

Best Wishes,

Sean Richardson

The contribution of the regional PR representatives is appreciated. My tasks are made easier by the support and prompt response for comments/input from the valued Board members and CEO.
