Report on ICR 2008, Marrakech

In 2006, ISRRT agreed to support the International Society of Radiologists with the 2008 ICR in Marrakech Morocco, by co-ordinating the Technologists program.

Due to French being the common language in the Region, we called on the support of Philippe Gerson, who generously agreed to assist. Philippe and CEO Sandy Yule attended a planning session in early 2008 following meetings in 2007 at RSNA. Cynthia Cowling, Dir of Education was also involved.

There were approximately 150 technologists attending the Congress and attendance at the Sessions was excellent with many questions and much enthusiastic discussion. Moroccan, Tunisian and Algerian radiographers as well as some by French technologists presented papers. Cynthia Cowling, Sandy Yule and I also presented material along with Philippe Gerson. The standard of papers was excellent.

We were also asked to participate in a session on Q/A in radiology hosted at the ICR by Dr Lawrence Lau as part of the IRQN (International Radiology Quality Network) program. Cynthia presented material based on her ISRRT Education programs in Q/A and I presented a paper on the Role of Clinical Risk Management in Radiology. This session also had a presentation by IAEA. A representative of WHO also attended the session and there was significant discussion on all of these groups working more closely together in the future. A follow up meeting to facilitate this is planned for later in 2008.

We had an ISRRT Booth as part of the excellent Technical Exhibition and many technologists took the opportunity to visit us and discuss the role of ISRRT. There was great interest in the 2010 Congress in Australia and many completed forms seeking further information.

The Moroccan Society were recently admitted as a Member Society of ISRRT and during the ICR Congress, the Tunisian Society also submitted their application and paid their fees – this will be ratified at the 2010 Council Meeting.

During the Congress, meetings were held with the incoming President of the ISR, Prof Hans Ringertz from Sweden. He is keen to continue the excellent relationship between our Societies, and to work closely together.

We met with Dr Lenny Tan who is the ISR liaison person coordinating the ICR 2010 Congress in Shanghai. Maria Law and Cynthia Cowling will work with the ICR 2010 Shanghai Organising Committee to provide a local technologists program.

Following some early discussions in Durban, we met with Dr Jan Labuscagne to progress plans for the education project in Tanzania to provide training on Q/A in basic radiography in addition to basic CR Q/A. Cynthia is coordinating the Project involving the African Education Rep Jenny Motto and Red Dir Caesar Barare. There is some urgency for this Project.

We also met with Dr Lawrence Lau to discuss any possible combined role for ISRRT and IRQN in Department Accreditation. Following a good discussion, it was suggested by Cynthia that there might be a role in assisting developing countries to set up their own department accreditation standards. Indeed an opportunity might exist in Guyana so Cynthia has offered to follow up on this during her forthcoming visit to the country. IRQN would certainly be interested in any opportunity.

Representatives form RSNA, NRPA and also ESR attended the Congress and look forward to working closely with ISRRT.

Sandy Yule left Morocco to have meetings with Katrin and Bodil to provide ISRRT representatives for forthcoming ECR Congresses.

There was interest in Corporate sponsorship of ISRRT by a representative of the French Drug Company Guebert and this will be followed up by Sandy Yule.

I must again express thanks to Philippe Gerson and his French Society colleagues for their efforts in putting together the excellent program at this Congress.
