The ISRRT is an organization composed of seventy-one national radiographic societies from sixty-eight countries representing more than 200,000 radiographers and radiological technologists. It was formed in 1959 to act as a link between radiographers and radiological technologists throughout the world.
The Society is dedicated to the improvement of standards of practice in radiation medicine technology. It is a non-political organization and is not a trade union. It is a not-for-profit organization.

The ISRRT is recognized as the international representative of radiation medicine technology as a non-govern mental organization in Official Relations with the World Health Organization. through its official relationship as an international non-governmental organization with the World Health Organization. It also has association with the United Nations and works with other international organizations  as other organizations such as the International Society of Radiologists,  Association of Radiology, the European Society of Radiology, and the International Commission for Radiological Education, and the International Atomic Energy Authority.
