The ISRRT is an organization composed of over eighty national radiographic societies from seventy five countries representing more than 350,000 radiographers and radiological technologists. It was formed in 1959 to act as a link between radiographers and radiological technologists throughout the world.
The Society is dedicated to the improvement of standards of practice in radiation medicine technology. It is a non-political organization and is not a trade union. It is a not-for-profit organization.

The ISRRT is recognized as the international representative of radiation medicine technology as a non-govern mental organization in Official Relations with the World Health Organization. Through its official relationship with the World Health Organization the ISRRT also has association with the United Nations and works with other international organizations such as the International Society of Radiologists,  Association of Radiology, the European Society of Radiology, and the International Commission for Radiological Education, and the International Atomic Energy Authority.
