This year's MRT week was a huge success. I assembled a rather large display in our hospital's main lobby featuring our graduation photos, CAMRT diplomas, a viewbox on which I displayed various radiographs, and some handouts ranging from radiation doses to education requirements. I placed the posters throughout the hospital, from in the department to in the various rooms to remind patients and visitors alike of our week. In addition, our CEO circulated a memo to all staff reminding everyone that Nov. 8-14th, 2009 was MRT week and to acknowledge the role we play as part of the health care team and to thank us for our dedication to the hospital and patients we serve. On Tues. Nov 10/09, I brought my viewbox, some radiographs, and a teacher package (assembled with CAMRT info.including the DVD) and went out to the local schools and made a presentation on the profession. I spoke to elementary (Gr 7/8) and secondary students. On Fri. Nov. 13 / 09, I spoke at the English high school as part of career day and a local reporter took my picture and wrote an article for the local paper, the Mattawa Recorder. I was very well received at all the schools I attended. I gave the pens and scribble boards to our staff here at the hospital to remind them about medical radiation technology week. They really enjoyed receiving the gifts - the scribble boards were a real hit. I received a number of compliments from the CEO, the Diagnostic Imaging Manager, and fellow staff for the display and for my willingness to go into the schools and share my knowledge with our young people.

The Radiation Therapy Department at the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton hosted numerous activities in celebration of MRT Week 2009. The excellent promotional materials from the CAMRT were used to educate our patients, families and healthcare staff about Medical Radiation Technologists. The balloons attracted attention to the posters and display table. We developed daily educational Word Games for Radiation Therapy staff. Regional Oncology Rounds for the hospital were presented by a Radiation Therapist on “Stereotactic Treatment: Going Under the Silent Knife”. MRT Week is a great opportunity for building community within our department, as well as showing staff appreciation. Throughout the week we celebrated with cake, enjoyed a tea provided by our secretaries, receptionists and nursing colleagues, and we ended the week with a luncheon sponsored by our Radiation Oncologists. Evening activities included Zumba Dancing, Movie Night in our lecture theatre, and Bowling Night. Staff also enjoyed finishing the week playing “Are You Smarter than an RT Student”, a game developed using the CAMRT practice exam questions. Every year the Radiation Therapists at the JCC also give back to the community. This MRT Week we raised money selling used books, and collected food donations for our local food bank.

I would like to suggest if you send the balloons out again that you also mention MRT week somewhere on them. People looked at them but could not figure out what they were about as it said nothing about Medical Radiation Technologists on them.

In my entire career, this is the first MRT Week celebration I've initiated-it takes lots of time and resources and I have only a staff of one MRT and 2 dedicated assistants. We spent hours pulling very old films, choosing different body areas for a display which changed every day. We set up portable viewboxes with labelled films and a "Question of the Day". We were fortunate to have neighbourhood vendors donate gift certificates which we used as 1st prizes and then used the CAMRT pens and wipe-off boards as runner-up prizes when we drew names from the correct answers. The display was tremendously popular with staff and patients. The balloons were great, I had a neighbourhood party store fill them with helium. Our open house was terrific and the week left everyone feeling good.

I just wanted to congratulate you on your choice of promotional items this year. The balloons were a great idea. We had an open house on Thursday for the hospital staff at St.Joes and the balloons were a nice addition to our waiting room. One staff member mentionned today that the stickers were also a good idea instead of the buttons used in previous years. The fact sheets are also nice to have in the waiting rooms and I keep the left overs to use when I do career days or tour high school students. For the second year in a row, MRT Week was celebrated in the Middle East at the College of the North Atlantic's campus in Doha, Qatar. The occasion was used to launch a new teaching tool the Medical Radiography program has recently acquired - a Cyber-Anatomy system which promotes the study of anatomical systems by projection of larger-than-life images in 3-D!Totally interactive and, to quote one visitor, "really cool!" We used MRT Week table stands, gave out CAMRT stickers to visitors, pens/lanyards and calendars to our clinical preceptors. A wonderful day and a great celebration with buffet lunch, student poster competition, and a slide show which highlighted both present and future MRTs in this country.

I am proud to be a Medical Radiation Technologist. It has provided a good life for me and my family. This is fun week at our hospital, Kingston General. Lunch is provided every day and we have a couple of nice baskets for door prizes.
